A.    Background

B.    Acknowledge the other side

C.  Arguments

D.  Thesis

E.   Appeal to audience

II. Body Paragraphs  (at least three)

A.     Topic sentence that asserts a main argument (ex. – The Dream    Act will benefit the US economy)

B.    Evidence

C.  Evidence

D.  Evidence

1. Types of evidence:  facts, statistics, expert opinions, examples, stories, quotes

2. Every piece of evidence must be explained (developed) – the writer must explain how the evidence relates to/supports the argument.

Ex. – Evidence: “illegal immigrants cannot work here legally.”  Therefore, if you vote for amnesty these immigrants will become legal workers who therefore make more money because employers will have to pay at least minimum wage.  This money will then be spent in US businesses, thus improving the economy (development).

SAMPLE INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH: Can you recognize all of the components?

Dear Senator Blumenthal,

Despite passage in the House of Representatives, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, or DREAM Act was recently defeated in the Senate.  This act would allow for illegal immigrant children, brought into the country as minors, to have the opportunity to gain permanent resident status, and therefore a path to citizenship.  Despite several prerequisites, opponents claim that passing the DREAM Act would be rewarding these children for the “crime” of illegal immigration.  However, upon closer scrutiny, the DREAM Act would educationally benefit many deserving immigrants who had no control over the illegal immigration action of their parents.  Furthermore, this act would benefit not only the defense of our country but also, and perhaps most importantly, our struggling economy.  For these reasons, and many others, I am urging you to not only support the DREAM Act, but also encourage your fellow senators to do the same.

SAMPLE BODY PARAGRAPH WITH TRANSITION:  Does this body paragraph have all of the components and meet rubric expectations?

Passing the Dream Act will lead to greater educational opportunities for immigrants, which will benefit our country.  Already, 65,000 illegal immigrants have managed to graduate high school each year.  However, many of these illegal immigrants are not able to go to college because they cannot afford the high costs of tuition.  The Dream Act will allow immigrants to not only have the opportunity to seek a college education, but would also allow these immigrants to apply for financial aid without fearing the possible consequence of deportation.  This would lead to more immigrants obtaining higher education because they would finally qualify for student loans and tuition breaks. Not only would this enable these immigrants to reach their potential, but would also lead to better contributions to our economy.  These are just some of the reasons why you should agree with so many educational groups who support the passage of the Dream Act and vote for this bill.

Laws that support the achievement of higher education will always be of benefit to our economy.  Passing the Dream Act will be no exception.  (sample transition to the next body paragraph)

SAMPLE CONCLUSION:  Does the conclusion have all of the components?

After living in the US since she was seven years old, Gaby Pacheco has managed to graduate with three degrees from Miami Dade College.  She “DREAM”s of more fully contributing to the nation that she loves, through becoming a music therapist with needy autistic children. Passing this act will not only do right by Gaby, and the many others whose hard work should be rewarded, but will have just as much of a beneficial impact for native-born Americans. My opponents claim on the contrary, that the DREAM Act would lead to a more difficult illegal immigration problem.  However, this cannot be true because it would only lead to millions of potential new recruits to bolster the defense of our borders.  Furthermore, new prospects presented by this bill would equate to new opportunities for our country to improve its struggling economy.   Therefore, for the sake of our state and country, and as my representative, I ask you to please support the passage of the DREAM Act.

Sincerely yours,

(sign your name)
